Have you ever felt too old and wished to have been born years after your actual birth-year? This has happened to me a lot of times in high school, especially because people pointed out that I was older than most, specifically, boys pointed it out. But overtime, I have learned to be at peace with my age, at joy with my birth-year. 2000 was a pretty year I think, the beginning of a new millennium. Bonus point is, people who are born in 2000 never have to calculate what age they will be in the future years since the last digits of each year will plainly show you the answer. From all the mathematical problems I have solved and yet to solve, at least calculating my age doesn’t have to be one.
Have you ever considered that you are able to experience all the people you love because you were born in the year that you were born in?
Does this make sense? it does to me. Think about the sibling whom you share some secrets with, the cousin who observes with you a sweet silly ritual, or your mama and papa. Think about that best-friend when you two fight the urge to laugh out loud in serious formal spaces. That one singer whose lyrics and voice just hit home and you can’t wait to see them sing live one day. And that teacher who listened as if they were your therapist. That leader who makes you feel a little less afraid of the world, or that soccer player whose performance on the field boosts the rush of your dopamine just a little more. I think many things in life have a lot to do with timing, and when you are born can absolutely determine how things play out in your life. Most of these people if not all exist or existed in your life-time, in a generation that made your path cross with theirs and you are able to experience them in real-time.
This has been very thought-provoking. Being born in 2000 means listening to Coldplay’s music and knowing I can actually plan one day to buy a ticket to go see them live on tour. It’s in this life-time, they are also alive, still making music and still got the energy to perform it.
Being born in 2000 means I get to experience my dad from his forties until his hair turns the colour of ash. I get to meet all my favourite older people still around, my favourite younger people to see them grow, and myself to grow with my favourite people in my age group. Only the year you were born in makes you find them as they are.
So we are not born too early or too late, we were born being right on time to live the life we are gifted with. Think of that year you were born that made way for you to experience all your best people. However old you are today, I hope like Esther from the Bible, you find that one person whose presence reminds you:
